Penopscot expedition oil painting
Oil on paper (50x23 Cm), Reproductions available

In June 1779, during the American Revolutionary War, The British landed on the Majabigaduwce peninsula at the mouth of the Penobscot River, and began to establish a fortified position from which to protect trade and the local population loyal to the Crown. As a reaction, the rebels sent an expeditionary force from Boston with orders to "capture, kill or destroy" the enemy, formed by some 44 ships (19 warships and 25 support), more than 1000 marines and militiamen, and about 100 artilleryman. For three weeks a hard naval and land siege lasted, which despite its superiority, led to a roaring defeat of the rebellious side, losing all its ships and half of its troops. Today the Penobscot expedition, is little known to the general public. Today is remembered as the largest naval disaster in the United States until Pearl Harbor, 162 years later in 1941.
